Survey of State Legislation Enacted to Prohibit or Limit Food Additives and Color Additives

Since 2023, when California enacted the first ban on color additives and food additives, more than two dozen states have proposed laws to regulate, restrict, or ban the use of certain color additives and food additives. As of mid-2026, over a dozen states have enacted laws to regulate, restrict, or ban the use of certain color additives and food additives. This state-by-state survey tracks laws enacted by July 2026.
