Haynes and Boone, LLP Of Counsel Rafael Anchia has joined the Dean’s Advisory Board at his alma mater, Tulane University School of Law. The Board advises the law school on strategies to position it for the future.
Also a Texas state legislator, Rep. Anchia is one of three Tulane Law School alumni who have joined the board. The university announced the news in a recent press release. Here is an excerpt:
Their careers span a variety of legal areas: real estate, politics and the military. Each brings a wealth of experience to the Board at a time when the law school is navigating a pandemic amid social unrest, seeking to strengthen the ranks of its diverse and distinguished faculty, and looking to build more robust academic programming.
They are:
- Texas House Rep. Rafael Anchia (L’93), an eight-term state legislative leader representing the Dallas area;
- Vivian de las Cuevas-Diaz (L’00), a Miami civic leader and partner in Holland & Knight’s Miami office who serves as the firm’s deputy in its Real Estate Section;
- U.S. Air Force Capt. Robert Waldrup (L’16), a JAG Corps attorney at Joint AF Base San Antonio and one of the founders of the Law School’s Waldrup-Crosby Endowed Law Scholarship.
“The board provides critical advice and support in helping the Law School achieve its strategic objectives,” said Dean David Meyer. “We are extremely fortunate to gain the experience and perspective of these extraordinarily accomplished alumni.”
“Each of them has already been instrumental in shaping the Law School, and I am grateful to them for taking on this important leadership role,” he added.
Anchia is a ninth-term state legislator who has risen to significant leadership roles in the Texas House and where he serves as Chair of the powerful Pensions Investments and Financial Services Committee. He was also elected by his peers to a third term as chair of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus (MALC), the oldest and largest Latino caucus in the United States.
Before his election to the House of Representatives in 2004, Anchia was elected as the District 7 trustee of the Dallas Independent School District, the nation’s 12th largest. Anchia is an attorney at the Dallas-based international law firm, Haynes and Boone LLP. From 2011 to 2015, he served as an appointee of President Barack Obama to the Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations, which advises the U.S. Trade Representative on issues related to international investment and trade. Prior to receiving his JD at Tulane Law, he graduated cum laude from Southern Methodist University.
