Michael J. Mazzone Elected to American Board of Trial Advocates

February 07, 2018

Haynes and Boone, LLP Partner Michael J. Mazzone has been elected to the American Board of Trial Advocates and the Houston Chapter of ABOTA.

Founded in 1958, ABOTA is an invitation-only national association of experienced trial lawyers and judges that promotes the U.S. Constitution’s Seventh Amendment, which guarantees the right to a civil jury trial. The organization has more than 7,600 members — lawyers who have extensive trial experience and who represent plaintiffs as well as defendants in civil cases. To be eligible for membership, a lawyer must have been the lead counsel in at least 10 civil jury trials that went to a jury verdict or resulted in a hung jury.

ABOTA works to educate the American public about the importance of the right to trial by jury and to promote integrity, honor and courtesy in the legal profession.

Mazzone is an accomplished trial lawyer who has tried jury cases against prominent lawyers in Texas, Louisiana and New Mexico. He represents energy companies in environmental contamination, indemnity and toxic tort cases and parties in construction litigation/arbitration and real estate disputes.

He is board certified in civil trial law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and is ranked by Chambers USA (Chambers & Partners) as a leading lawyer in environmental law in Texas (2015-2017).

Mazzone shares his experience and skills with other lawyers and law students in a variety of forums. He has presented on trial advocacy, arbitration and litigation at oil and gas industry conferences, bar association seminars, the Texas Environmental Superconference and the University of Texas Law School, and he taught in the University of Houston Law School’s trial advocacy program. He is a member of the American Arbitration Association's National Panel of Construction Arbitrators and has been a speaker at the AAA's national and regional seminars.

Mazzone also oversees Haynes and Boone’s Volunteer Prosecutors Program, through which firm lawyers try misdemeanor jury trials for the cities of Houston and Arlington.

In congratulating Mazzone, ABOTA National President Cynthia McGuinn said, “Your election to ABOTA membership further evidences your high personal character, honorable reputation and proficiency as a trial lawyer.”

Haynes and Boone Partner Lynne Liberato praised Mazzone’s election: “ABOTA is one of the most prestigious and highly selective organizations for trial lawyers. Michael's election reflects his extensive experience as a skilled advocate in the courtroom.”
