SMU Dedman School of Law Names Tim Powers Among Distinguished Alumni

Southern Methodist University’s Dedman School of Law this month will recognize Haynes and Boone, LLP Senior Counsel and former Managing Partner Tim Powers among the school’s Distinguished Alumni.

Tim will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award for Private Practice during a special ceremony on Thursday, March 31, in Dallas. He will be honored alongside Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Nathan L. Hecht; David S. Huntley, senior executive vice president and chief compliance officer of AT&T Inc.; Kit Richardson Sawers, president of Klyde Warren Park; and Yulise Reaves Waters, senior chief innovations officer of Lone Star Justice Alliance.

The SMU Distinguished Alumni Award is the highest honor the law school bestows upon its alumni and friends. Past recipients include Haynes Boone Co-Founder and Partner

Tim served as Haynes Boone’s managing partner from 2015 to 2020, during which time the firm developed its 2025 long-term strategic plan, had revenue growth of more than 25%, and expanded into six new locations, including London. Currently, Tim serves as a senior counsel, advisor, and ambassador for the firm.

Throughout his career with Haynes and Boone, Tim led the development of the firm's international practice, as well as its global geographic growth. He is also widely credited with having led the legal development of the subscription-secured credit facility market, which has grown over the last 35 years to an annual market size of more than $700 billion.

Tim received his law degree from SMU Dedman School of Law in 1980. He has served as a member of the Executive Board of the school of law and currently serves as the chair of the SMU Tate Lecture Series Board of Directors. He has served on the Board of Directors of the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth, YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas, Dallas Regional Chamber and Crossroads Community Services, among others. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
