Biography

Jonathan Bowser is a registered patent attorney whose practice focuses on patent litigation disputes, patent litigation support, and related counseling. Jonathan leverages his technical experience and background to assist clients in resolving patent disputes, primarily involving hi-tech technologies.

Patent Litigation

Jonathan focuses his practice on post-grant validity disputes including inter partes review (IPRs) before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) and ex parte reexaminations, often in parallel with litigation in federal district courts or the International Trade Commission (ITC). Jonathan is frequently lead counsel for many prominent companies involved in high-stake disputes. He has been counsel in more than 150 AIA trials before the PTAB. Jonathan also litigates IPR appeals before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

He also litigates invalidity and infringement disputes in federal district courts and has significant experience preparing dispositive pleadings.

Litigation Support

Jonathan frequently assists clients in litigation support roles, particularly in pre-litigation investigations. For example, Jonathan evaluates patents for invalidity and infringement issues, including comparing patent claims to technical standards, and counsels clients through pre-litigation investigations. In this role, Jonathan develops technical invalidity and non-infringement positions to assist clients in pre-litigation licensing negotiations.

Technical experience

Jonathan practices primarily in high-tech, oil drilling, and mechanical device technologies. For example, Jonathan has significant experience with standards-essential video coding technologies (H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC, H.266/VVC, VP9, AV1), cellular wireless standards (3GPP including 4G LTE and 5G), and IEEE standards including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. In addition, Jonathan has significant experience working with other hi-tech technologies including artificial intelligence (AI), image processing, vehicle safety and autonomous features, multimedia streaming, cloud computing, semiconductor devices, networking, financial transactions, smart drilling for oil and gas production, and medical devices.

Jonathan is a frequent author and presenter on post-grant issues.
