Philip John
Biography
Philip John brings more than two decades of oil and gas and emerging technology experience to his legal practice. Before becoming a lawyer, he worked as a petroleum engineer in production engineering, reservoir engineering and operations, serving in both technical and senior management roles. He led teams responsible for full-field development, artificial lift, complex well interventions, reservoir simulation and reserves. He also led a multi-well, multi-pad miscible gas enhanced oil recovery project in an unconventional resource play and worked on waterflooding projects.
Philip focuses his practice on technical oil and gas litigation, including lease termination, development and royalty disputes. Drawing on his industry experience, he understands the technical and operational issues underlying these disputes and helps clients pursue practical resolutions through litigation or negotiated settlements.
Philip’s emerging technology experience includes cellulosic ethanol, algal biomass, compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas and medical devices. His technical and business background gives him first-hand insight into the development, production and operation of conventional and unconventional oil and gas assets.
Philip served as a judicial intern to the Honorable Sofia Adrogué of the Texas Business Court, Eleventh Division, and the Honorable Yvonne Y. Ho, U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Southern District of Texas.
Philip earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Houston Law Center, where he served as executive editor of the Houston Law Review and was inducted into the Order of the Coif and the Order of the Barons. He also holds master’s degrees in finance, industrial property and petroleum engineering, as well as bachelor’s degrees in chemistry and biotechnology.
