Haynes and Boone Expands Bay Area Presence with Addition of Experienced Patent Lawyer

July 07, 2020

Philip Albert, a San Francisco lawyer who has handled patent prosecution across a range of technologies and industries for three decades, has joined Haynes and Boone, LLP as a partner.

“Philip is an exceptional lawyer who fits in perfectly with our culture, our historical strength representing technology clients, and our ongoing plans to expand our presence in California,” Haynes and Boone Managing Partner Tim Powers said.

The firm has hired ten other lawyers in the Bay Area in recent months, including Roger Royse, Roger Kuan and Jason Novak, and plans to soon open an office in downtown San Francisco.

Albert handles patent prosecution, including interfacing with patent practitioners in other countries, setting up internal patent review processes so that limited resources are allocated to the most important inventions, evaluating patents of others for purchase, licensing, or design-around, and addressing intellectual property components of a larger transaction, acquisition or due diligence project. He has significant experience representing clients developing many critical technologies, including streaming, network protocols, network security, artificial intelligence, blockchain, animation, and the Internet of Things.

He was most recently a partner in the San Francisco office of Davis Wright Tremaine LLP. An engineer by training, he previously worked at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and founded a company that produced semi-custom software and turnkey computer systems for accounting tasks and bank operations.

“I was drawn to Haynes and Boone by the broad-based support and resources it has provided to its Intellectual Property practice,” Albert said. “It has the infrastructure and the reputation to fully serve my existing clients and to reach new ones.”

Jeff Wolfson, chair of the firm’s Patent Prosecution Practice Group, said Albert is a valuable addition to the firm’s full-service prosecution practice. “Phil is skilled at translating technical matters to clients and to the patent office, and, like our lawyers, he is committed to being a trusted advisor and providing maximum value to clients by focusing on protecting clients’ most commercially valuable intellectual property.”

The Haynes and Boone Patent Prosecution and Patent Trials Practice Groups offer sophisticated counseling and portfolio management, representation in post-grant proceedings at the USPTO, and collaboration with the IP Litigation Practice Group to represent clients in federal court litigation and cases before the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC). In 2020, Managing Intellectual Property named Haynes and Boone as the leading patent prosecution firm in the southern U.S. A 2019 report by Juristat listed Haynes and Boone among the nation’s top-performing patent prosecution firms. The previous year, the company ranked Haynes and Boone No. 2 among the Top 100 Patent Firms in the U.S.

Haynes and Boone is an international corporate law firm with offices in Texas, New York, California, Charlotte, Chicago, Denver, Washington, D.C., London, Mexico City and Shanghai, providing a full spectrum of legal services in energy, technology, financial services and private equity. With more than 575 lawyers, Haynes and Boone is ranked among the largest U.S.-based firms by The National Law Journal, The American Lawyer and The Lawyer. It also was recognized across the board for excellence in the BTI Consulting Group’s 2020 “A-Team” report, which identifies the law firms that in-house counsel single out for providing superior client service.
