Haynes and Boone, LLP Partners John Fognani, Patrick L. Hughes and Lee Johnston are included in the 2021 edition of the Colorado Super Lawyers legal directory published by Thomson Reuters.

Fognani is an environmental lawyer, Hughes is a restructuring lawyer, and Johnston is an intellectual property (IP) trial lawyer in the firm’s Denver office. Super Lawyers is a rating service of outstanding lawyers from more than 70 practice areas who have attained a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. The selection process includes independent research, peer nominations and peer evaluations. Of those nominated, only 5% of the total lawyers in the state are selected for inclusion.

Fognani has practiced in Denver for 40 years as a natural resources and environmental lawyer with extensive cross-discipline transactional, administrative, litigation and appellate experience. His experience spans complex transactions and structures; environmental compliance and defense of enforcement actions and defense and prosecution of citizen suits; regulatory and judicial challenges; project development and permitting, and client counseling involving cutting-edge resources and environmental matters. His practice emphasizes mineral, oil and gas, water resource and energy project development, domestically and internationally, access and public lands issues, project finance and regulatory compliance. Fognani has knowledge in a range of industry disciplines covering mining, oil and gas, energy and clean fuels, alternative energy and manufacturing. He was the founding partner of Fognani & Faught, PLLC.

Hughes has represented countless business debtors, secured creditors and court appointed committees in numerous restructuring cases throughout the country. Hughes also has had an active business litigation practice, and he has also counseled boards and management teams on a variety of transactional and litigation matters which arise out of restructuring situations, including the purchase and sale of assets and litigation arising in these situations. His practice has involved key roles in some of the largest business bankruptcy cases filed. He is credited with several reported court decisions in many other noteworthy cases of regional and national significance. While his practice has encompassed all types of businesses, he has experience in restructuring matters affecting energy companies, and companies subject to mass tort or large litigation claims.

Johnston partners with clients as a trusted advisor to successfully resolve their most complex business disputes in an efficient, timely manner. His national trial practice includes patent, copyright, trademark and trade secret litigation, where he works with companies and individuals to maximize the value of their IP portfolio and protect their competitive advantage by obtaining temporary and preliminary injunctions. Owing to his singular focus on achieving their business objectives, clients also hire Johnston on a repeat basis to handle their large, complex business litigation and arbitration matters in non-IP disputes.
