Haynes and Boone Hosts Virtual Career Building Programs for Pinkston Students

February 03, 2021

On Feb. 3, Haynes and Boone, LLP hosted a virtual “Day in the Life of a Texas Legislator” program for students from the L.G. Pinkston P-TECH Preparatory Collegiate Academy.

Haynes and Boone for years has mentored students from L.G. Pinkston, whose student body historically comes from underrepresented backgrounds. The P-TECH Collegiate Academy seeks to empower students who want to position themselves on the forefront of emerging health, science and technology fields. Students can choose a career pathway and take courses that provide the academic, technical, and workplace skills employers are seeking.

Haynes and Boone partnered with the school to develop a curriculum that provides students the basic courses and skills needed to pursue legal careers.

For the “Day in the Life of a Texas Legislator” program, Haynes and Boone lawyers and Texas state representatives Rafael Anchia (D-Dallas) and John Turner (D-Dallas), and Texas Sen. Nathan Johnson (D-Dallas) discussed their career paths, life in the legislature, and views on the upcoming session. During the panel, the students asked questions about constituent issues and topics they’re studying in their Government class.

In late January, Haynes and Boone hosted its annual “Mocktail” event virtually for 11th and 12th grade Pinkston P-TECH students. During the event, 40 Haynes and Boone lawyers across six of the firm’s offices joined Dallas Independent School District industry partners to conduct mock interviews, network, and discuss resume tips with the students.

“These events serve as great opportunities for the students to brush up on their networking skills, learn about a variety of career paths, and meet leaders of industry and government,” said Brent Beckert, associate and co-chair of Haynes and Boone’s Pipeline Committee. “We are especially grateful that Senator Johnson and Representatives Anchia and Turner took the time out of an incredibly busy legislative session to help inspire the next generation of leaders in the state.”

Haynes and Boone’s Pipeline Committee works with local communities to support, encourage, and develop a talented and diverse future workforce. The committee engages with students of all levels, from middle school through university, to ensure that those from underrepresented backgrounds are connected to their legal community.
