Simon Curtis


Simon Curtis is a maritime lawyer with extensive experience in shipbuilding and offshore procurement matters.

As the author of the first four editions of the textbook, The Law of Shipbuilding Contracts, published by Informa Law Library – the fourth edition of which was published in November 2012 – Simon has extensive knowledge of English law on marine construction. He has been cited in each edition of The World’s Leading Shipping and Maritime Lawyers since 1998.

Simon lectures regularly on a range of shipbuilding and offshore issues, including contracts for the construction and employment of FSOs and FPSOs, and is also a contributing author to Ship Building, Sale and Finance and Force Majeure and Frustration of Contract, also published by Informa Law Library.

Simon is recognized in the 2019 UK edition of The Legal 500, Legalease, the international directory of law firms, on their elite list of leading individuals in shipping, and is "very experienced." Simon is also recommended in the oil and gas section. In Legal 500 2017 it was noted that "clients praise team leader Simon Curtis for his 'first-rate knowledge of the law, vast experience in the area and sound tactical sense.'" Simon has been recognised as one of the “top five” maritime lawyers in the UK in the Guide to the Best of the Best, Legal Media Group since 1998, and recognized as one of the world’s foremost legal practitioners in the shipping category of Who’s Who Legal, Law Business Research since 2008, when it was first published.

Simon is a leading lawyer in the Shipping section of the 2019 edition of Chambers UK, Chambers and Partners, which describes him as “a heavyweight who is highly regarded in the [shipping] industry and very tuned in and knowledgeable in the shipping field." Simon served on the Board of Directors of Haynes and Boone between 2016-2019.

New ‘Law of Shipbuilding Contracts, 5th Edition’ To Be Published 2019

Haynes and Boone CDG is pleased to announce that the fifth edition of “The Law of Shipbuilding Contracts”, the only current English law textbook specifically concerning shipbuilding, will be published in December 2019. The book is a long established guide (the first edition was published in 1991) which is used by shipping industry participants and their commercial and legal advisers worldwide. The new edition will update and expand the current fourth edition, which was published in 2012.
