Press Release

New Edition of 'The Law of Shipbuilding Contracts' Published

May 28, 2020

Haynes and Boone, LLP is pleased to announce that the fifth edition of “The Law of Shipbuilding Contracts,” the only current English law textbook specifically concerning shipbuilding, has been published and is available for purchase. The book is a long-established guide (the first edition was published in 1991), and used by shipping industry participants and their commercial and legal advisers worldwide.

The new edition updates and expands on the fourth edition, which was published in 2012. It has been comprehensively updated, including commentary on recent High Court decisions on shipbuilding contracts and the ancillary agreements to a shipbuilding project, including refund guarantees.

Senior Counsel of Haynes and Boone’s London office, Simon Curtis, who was the sole author of the previous four editions, is joined as authors of this latest edition by Haynes and Boone partner William Cecil, who heads the firm’s dispute resolution team in London, and by Ian Gaunt, president of the London Maritime Arbitrators Association.

In addition to being a vital resource on the law of shipbuilding contracts, the new edition will for the first time contain additional commentary on offshore construction contracts.

As for previous editions, the new edition is relevant to:

  • Purchasers and charterers of newbuilding tonnage.
  • Shipbuilders and offshore construction yards.
  • Lawyers and insurers working in the maritime, offshore oil and gas and construction sectors.
  • Banks and other finance providers.

"I am delighted that Ian Gaunt and William Cecil are co-authors with me of the fifth edition of "The Law of Shipbuilding Contracts," Simon Curtis said. “They have brought substantial expertise and insights to this edition, which updates the text in light of numerous shipbuilding judgments and awards since 2012, and expands its scope to encompass offshore construction issues.”
