Tim Powers Interviewed in Hsu Untied Podcast on Remote Leadership During the COVID-19 Pandemic

May 05, 2020

Haynes and Boone, LLP Managing Partner Tim Powers was featured in the Hsu Untied podcast about how to maintain effective and connected leadership amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hsu Untied is hosted by Richard Hsu, a managing director of legal recruiting firm Major, Lindsey & Africa. His podcast features interviews with lawyers, entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, best-selling authors, athletes, TED speakers and TV/movie celebrities.

Here is an excerpt from the podcast:

Hsu: What do you think are the differences of leading remotely and trying to do it in the more traditional in-office sense?

Powers: I do not think that leading remotely is tremendously different than leading in your normal circumstance. Law firm leaders at national and global firms that have multiple offices travel between those firms constantly, and when they are not in those offices locally, they have to lead those offices remotely.

As a leader you have to have built up a level of trust with those that you are leading. Those who are following you have to believe that you are first and foremost focused on the greater good of your organization and that you care about [your people]. If they don’t believe that you care about them, their future, the future of the organization, and the team as a whole, I think your credibility in a remote perspective is subject to challenge. Our [professionals] are naturally trained to question and challenge everything. It’s what makes them great lawyers. Based on that, if you don’t have the credibility and the trust up front, I think anyone will find it will be difficult to lead no matter how inspirational you are
