The latest edition of the Lexology Panoramic: Shipbuilding guide has been published. The 2026 guide covers shipbuilding in key jurisdictions around the world, with leading shipbuilding practitioners answering the same key questions on the following topics: participation and ownership; key contractual considerations; pricing, payment and financing; default, liabilities and remedies; contract forms and assignment; and updates and trends.
The chapter on shipbuilding contracts governed by the law of England and Wales is written by Haynes Boone’s William Cecil, Fiona Cain and Mette Duffy. The chapter includes key developments in shipbuilding under the law of England and Wales, including recent decisions on agreements to agree, default notices and refund guarantees. It concludes with an updates and trends section covering “SHIP25”, an updated version of the Norwegian standard form shipbuilding contract, the Arbitration Act 2025, and the United States Trade Representative’s action and proposed action.
The law of England and Wales continues to be one of the preferred governing laws for shipbuilding contracts around the world (particularly where the buyers and the builders are based in different jurisdiction), even if the parties have no nexus with England and Wales.
