Dan Geyser Named One of Law360’s 2022 Appellate MVPs

September 07, 2022
For the second time in four years, Law360 has named Haynes and Boone, LLP Partner Daniel L. Geyser as an Appellate MVP – an honor bestowed this year upon only four lawyers in the United States.

Dan is chair of the firm’s U.S. Supreme Court Practice. He is among a select group of highly experienced lawyers who regularly handle significant cases in the U.S. Supreme Court. Listed among the “veritable who’s who of the Supreme Court bar” (Empirical SCOTUS), Dan has argued 13 Supreme Court cases in private practice, with his 14th and 15th arguments already set for next term. He has twice had three cert. petitions granted in a 12-month period (a feat matched by few global firms), and personally handled over 5% of the Court’s merits docket in OT 2018. His work this past year produced two Supreme Court victories for Haynes Boone.

In Siegel v. Fitzgerald (No. 21-441), Dan and the firm prevailed in a high-stakes bankruptcy dispute involving the constitutionality of a 2017 federal law increasing quarterly trustee fees in large Chapter 11 bankruptcies. Dan’s team convinced the Court to grant review, unanimously strike down an Act of Congress, provide clarity on the “uniformity” provision of the Constitution’s Bankruptcy Clause, and expose the government to potentially $324 million of refunds for debtors and creditors nationwide. Earlier, in Badgerow v. Walters (No. 20-1143), Dan convinced the Court to grant review and won a major jurisdictional challenge under the Federal Arbitration Act, placing limits on federal judicial power and reshaping ordinary post-arbitration practice across the country. At the end of last Term, Dan also had two cert. petitions granted in a single day – both in major business cases (involving, respectively, the False Claims Act and Bank Secrecy Act) that will be decided next Term.

Dan was previously named an Appellate MVP by Law360 in 2019, one of four lawyers nationwide to receive the honor that year.
