Lynne Liberato to Receive Chief Justice Pope Professionalism Award from Texas Center for Legal Ethics

September 07, 2022
The Texas Center for Legal Ethics is honoring Haynes and Boone, LLP Senior Counsel Lynne Liberato with the 2022 Chief Justice Jack Pope Professionalism Award on Thursday, Sept. 8, in Austin.

The Center presents the award to a judge or attorney who personifies the highest standards of professionalism and integrity in appellate law. The award is named for former Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Jack Pope, who pioneered the promulgation of ethics rules and professional education for Texas judges and inspired generations of lawyers to the highest ethical standards.

“I aspired to mirror the high ethical standards of Chief Justice Pope and many other fine lawyers and judges because I would never want to let them down (and knew I would have some explaining to do otherwise),” Lynne said. “Chief Justice Pope was a great person and a great judge. I am thrilled to win an award named after him.”

Lynne will be recognized at the Texas Supreme Court Historical Society’s 27th-annual John Hemphill Dinner.

Haynes Boone Senior Counsel Nina Cortell, who received the Pope Award in 2013, said: “Lynne exemplifies professionalism and integrity. We are fortunate to have her as a colleague and mentor, who has helped instill high ethical standards among so many lawyers at Haynes Boone.”

Lynne is widely known for becoming the first woman president of the Houston Bar Association in 1993. In 2020, she was a recipient of the 2020 Justice Ruby Kless Sondock Award for outstanding accomplishments in the legal industry. Also that year, she was named the recipient of the 2020 Lifetime of Excellence in Advocacy Award from the Texas Association of Civil Trial and Appellate Specialists (TACTAS).

In 2019, the Texas Bar Foundation presented Lynne with the Gregory S. Coleman Outstanding Texas Appellate Lawyer Award, which each year celebrates one distinguished appellate lawyer who has an outstanding practice and demonstrates a commitment to mentoring young attorneys and to providing legal services to the underserved. Also, the State Bar of Texas’ Board of Directors appointed her to the Legislature’s Texas Commission on Judicial Selection. She was the sole member of the 15-person commission to be appointed by the State Bar, which regulates the legal profession in Texas and is the second-largest state bar in the nation. Lynne previously served as president of the State Bar of Texas.

Lynne also has been recognized for her commitment to community throughout her career. In 2019, The United Way of Greater Houston appointed her as Board Trustee Emeritus in recognition of her longtime contributions to the organization and its most significant initiatives. She is only the second person in the history of the United Way to receive the title.
