May 25, 2021
World IP Review has listed Haynes and Boone, LLP Partners Purvi Patel Albers, Jeff Becker and David McCombs among the nation’s leading trademark and patent lawyers for 2021.

WIPR Leaders ranks the top patent, trademark and copyright lawyers worldwide. The 2021 rankings follow a four-month nomination period in which WIPR sought views from 12,000 IP professionals and vetted every nominated lawyer for suitability by exploring their practice history, industry expertise and notable cases, as well as any additional activities, such as writing and teaching responsibilities. See the WIPR listing of trademark leaders here and patent leaders here.

Albers is a member of the firm’s board of directors and serves as trusted adviser and counsel to Fortune 500 companies and high-growth ventures on the management of their valuable brand investments. Her primary practice focus includes: U.S. and foreign trademark clearance, protection and enforcement strategy; U.S. and foreign trademark and internet enforcement, including oppositions, cancellations and Uniform Dispute Resolution Proceedings (UDRP) disputes; social media counseling and enforcement; and copyright, trade dress, non-traditional trademark and customs counseling and enforcement.

Becker is one of only 11 U.S. trademark attorneys who has been repeatedly, nationally recognized by World Trademark Review’s WTR 1000, Globe Publishing, Ltd. (2011-2021) for his experience in trademark law and for having the rare combination of both “Prosecution and Strategy” and “Enforcement and Litigation” skill. Becker served as the chair of the firm’s Trademark Practice Group for over a decade, and prior to that served as head of the firm’s IP and Technology Transactions Section. He focuses his practice on the legal aspects of brand management, including clearing their marks for use, registering those marks in the U.S. and abroad, managing domain name acquisitions, commercializing marks through licenses and merchandising agreements, assessing infringement risks, enforcing their trademark rights against others and defending them against allegations of infringement.

McCombs is primary counsel for many leading corporations in inter partes review (IPR) and is regularly identified as one of the most active attorneys appearing before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). His practice spans 35 years and includes appellate argument, patent litigation, and portfolio development. McCombs is recognized for having a “strong Federal Circuit patent litigation practice and prominent PTAB expertise.” (Chambers Global 2019). He is described as “one of the best, not just of patent practitioners but practitioners generally” and lauded as “extremely organized, responsive, thoughtful, and calm.” (Chambers Global 2020).

All three partners were also recently recognized (individually) in the 2021 edition of Chambers USA: Albers for IP: Trade Mark & Copyright (Texas); Becker for IP: Trademark & Copyright (Texas); and McCombs for IP (Texas).
