Michael Mulligan

Michael Mulligan is a partner in the Restructuring Practice Group in Haynes Boone’s London office.

His practice focuses on insolvency and commercial litigation and he has particular experience in all aspects of corporate recovery, bankruptcy, fraud, asset recovery and enforcement. His cases often cross multiple jurisdictions working for clients in the USA, the Caribbean, Hong Kong and other offshore jurisdictions.

He previously worked for more than four years in the Cayman Islands where he acted on many of the largest hedge fund cases to date. He continues to advise on high value offshore disputes including arbitrations.

Michael is a solicitor-advocate holding higher rights of audience for civil proceedings since 2004 and he appears in court on behalf of clients.

The Legal 500, Legalease, recommends that Michael “has the ability to deconstruct complex legal issues and explain them in straightforward ways – a dogged advocate for his clients.” Chambers Global Guide, Chambers and Partners,has recommended him as an “experienced” practitioner who is “singled out by peers and clients, who have been impressed by his work.”

Michael has established a reputation in the market for strong technical advice allied with a sound commercial approach. He is particularly well connected within the legal and accountancy professions in London and globally and his broad practice covers insolvency and restructuring advice, commercial litigation and dispute resolution, international arbitration, shareholder actions, contract disputes, high value cross-border litigation, hedge fund liquidations, directors’ duties and disqualification, fraud, asset recovery and enforcement.

Michael has spoken at many industry conferences and regularly offers comment in the national press on insolvency issues and cross-border disputes.

  • Acted for the claimant real estate developer in a high value LCIA arbitration relating to assets subject to bankruptcy proceedings in the US.
  • Acting for the defendant director to a breach of directors’ duties and wrongful trading claim brought by the joint administrators of a leading healthcare provider.
  • Acted for joint liquidators on a misfeasance claim against the directors of a health and beauty company.
  • Acting for the claimant in an LMAA arbitration relating to the sale of a super-yacht.
  • Acted for the trustee in bankruptcy on a successful section 423 challenge to a declaration of trust relating to a London property.
  • Acted for joint administrators on the sale of the business and assets of an international tour operator.
  • Acted for the official liquidator of a Cayman company in relation to a case involving allegations of dishonesty, money laundering and the recovery of assets relating to the sale of a super-yacht.
  • Acted for the joint administrators on their appointment and sale of the business and assets of a London based luxury chocolatier.
