Haynes and Boone, LLP Partner Albert Tan this month participated in a Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute, Inc. (SWFI) panel discussion about the future of private markets as they emerge from pandemic-related lockdowns.
The discussion was part of SWFI’s Institute Fund Summit 2021 Earth Day Event, produced virtually on April 22 for global institutional investors, such as pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, endowments, family offices, and other long-term investors.
Tan was a panelist along with Caitlin Walsh, senior portfolio manager of Thematic Investing and Active Equities with CPP Investments, and Prakash H. Mehta, partner with Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP and moderator of the discussion.
Tan, who is a partner and co-head of the Global Fund Financing Group at Haynes and Boone, discussed the past and current state of fundraising and lending. He said the pandemic put a pause on some financial institutions that were previously extremely active in the marketplace – giving opportunities to other lenders that did not necessarily have to wait out the market fluctuations.
“Overall, the market picked up pace in the third and fourth quarters as large private capital funds and institutional investors recognized that a dislocation was taking place, and they were able to mobilize really quickly and scale up the fundraising to take advantage of some of the dislocation in the marketplace,” Tan told the audience.
As the market stabilized and became active in early 2021, lenders began to open up their balance sheets, he said.
“We have come out of the pandemic really strong – fundraising is there, liquidity from the financial institutions is there – so the level we are seeing from our clients’ side, from a pure production matrix, shows everyone operating at a maximum capacity,” Tan said.
