Press Release

Ernest Martin Elected Member of The American Law Institute

October 23, 2019

Haynes and Boone, LLP Partner Ernest Martin has been elected as a member of The American Law Institute (ALI) for his demonstrated excellence in the legal profession.

Established in 1923, ALI is an independent organization that aims to simplify and update U.S. common law in line with current social needs. The organization is composed of judges, lawyers and law professors of the highest caliber and produces leading scholarly insight, which influences courts, legislatures, legal scholarship and education.

ALI membership is a distinct professional honor granted through a rigorous nomination and selection process and exclusively extended to candidates who demonstrate a commitment and desire to participate in the institute’s work. Successful candidates contribute to ALI’s reputation for producing work of the highest integrity and standard.

Martin is among 50 new members nationwide chosen from confidential nominations submitted by other members earlier this year.

"The American Law Institute has accomplished so much in our nearly 100 years, due in great part to the wisdom and participation of our talented, experienced, and diverse membership,” said ALI President David F. Levi. “It is with great pride that I welcome this new group of members, who will bring their expertise and distinctive voices to the institute’s ongoing Restatement, Principles, and Model Code projects."

Martin is head of the firm’s Insurance Recovery Practice Group. He is Co-Founder of the State Bar of Texas Insurance Law Section, Co-Chair of the Insurance Coverage Litigation Committee of the Section of Litigation of the ABA, an Adjunct Professor of Insurance Law at SMU Law School, and has been widely recognized by his legal industry peers and corporate clients.

At Haynes and Boone, Martin exclusively represents corporate policyholders in the areas of complex insurance recovery and consultation. When insurance companies refuse to pay claims, defense costs, settlements, or judgments, corporate clients call him to represent their interests against insurance companies. He uses his vast experience handling insurance coverage matters, knowledge of key insurance principles, insight into how insurance companies operate, and understanding of his client’s business objectives to maximize insurance recoveries from insurance companies in the most efficient way possible.
