Press Release

Leading U.S. Supreme Court and Appellate Lawyer Daniel L. Geyser Joins Haynes Boone

August 30, 2021

Haynes and Boone, LLP welcomes Daniel L. Geyser, one of the nation’s leading Supreme Court and appellate lawyers, as the Denver-based chair of its U.S. Supreme Court Practice. He brings a wealth of experience to Haynes Boone’s award-winning appellate group, which already boasts one of the nation’s largest and most accomplished appellate teams, including a top Chambers USA rating in Texas. At Haynes Boone, Dan will continue to focus on complex and high-stakes appellate litigation at all levels of the judiciary.

Dan is widely regarded as one of the nation’s premier Supreme Court and appellate lawyers. He has argued 11 Supreme Court cases in private practice; in the past half-decade, only four other non-government lawyers nationwide have argued as many times before the Court. Dan recently had three cert petitions granted in a 12-month period (a feat matched by few global firms), and personally handled over 5% of the Supreme Court’s merits docket in the 2018 Term. He routinely handles high-profile cases of particular importance to the business community—with a special focus on bankruptcy, patents, securities, ERISA, and arbitration—and has racked up significant wins when his clients faced long odds.

Beyond the Supreme Court, Dan represents clients in high-stakes matters in appellate courts nationwide. He has briefed or argued cases in nearly every federal circuit, litigated cases in virtually every major area of federal law, and won appeals in 8- and 9-figure disputes.

Arriving in advance of the upcoming Supreme Court term, Dan is already set to argue his 12th Supreme Court case this November: Badgerow v. Walters, a closely watched dispute involving the Federal Arbitration Act and federal jurisdiction. This case was one of Dan’s two cert grants in 2021 alone.

“I have seen firsthand the extent to which companies crave the unique insights Dan can offer about how to distill and craft arguments so that they win the day on appeal,” said Haynes Boone Appellate Partner Ben Mesches, co-chair of litigation at the firm. “Clients want more of Dan, and I can’t wait to see how he elevates our formidable appellate practice and augments our ability to represent companies on mission-critical cases before any appellate tribunal in the country.”

Dan said he has admired Haynes Boone for years and developed close working relationships with many of the firm’s lawyers. “Haynes Boone is an elite national law firm with world-class appellate talent,” he said. “The firm is on a boundless trajectory. It operates in major markets nationwide. Its client roster includes some of the world’s best companies. This was a rare opportunity to build a high-end Supreme Court practice alongside superstar litigators. And it’s even better that these special lawyers are also friends. I’m beyond thrilled to join this extraordinary team.”

With nearly two decades of experience, Dan has earned widespread recognition for appellate advocacy. He was named one of Law360’s 2019 “Appellate MVPs,” an honor awarded to only four lawyers in the United States. He has also been named to the National Law Journal’s 2019 “Appellate Hot List,” achieved national appellate rankings in the 2019-2021 Chambers USA and The Legal 500 US directories, and been recognized by multiple other publications. He is a noted authority in the field and is frequently invited to speak about the Supreme Court.

Dan joins Haynes Boone from appellate boutique Alexander Dubose & Jefferson, where he was chair of the firm’s U.S. Supreme Court and Federal Appellate Practice. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa, with honors and distinction, from Stanford University, and with honors from Harvard Law School, where he was the Notes Chair of the Harvard Law Review, a best-brief winner and oralist on the championship team of Harvard’s moot-court competition, and a research assistant to Professor Laurance H. Tribe, working on his academic writing and appellate docket.

Haynes Boone’s Appellate Practice Group was rated Band 1 in Texas in Chambers USA 2021, with market sources praising the team’s eight, Chambers-ranked appellate lawyers: “Their attention to detail is truly remarkable, and they are some of the best critical thinkers I have ever encountered.”

Haynes and Boone, LLP is an international corporate law firm with offices in Texas, New York, California, Charlotte, Chicago, Denver, Washington, D.C., London, Mexico City and Shanghai, providing a full spectrum of legal services in energy, technology, financial services and private equity. With 600 lawyers, Haynes Boone is ranked among the largest U.S.-based firms by The National Law Journal, The American Lawyer and The Lawyer.
