Haynes and Boone Lawyers Recognized in 2020 IAM Patent 1000 Directory

June 25, 2020

Haynes and Boone, LLP and 14 lawyers have been selected for the 2020 edition of Intellectual Asset Management (IAM) Patent 1000, an independently researched legal directory.

The IAM Patent 1000 spotlights firms and individuals recognized by peers and clients as outstanding in the patent field. IAM interviewed more than 1,800 patent lawyers and in-house counsel over five months to decide which firms and lawyers to include in the directory.

Haynes and Boone was prominently featured as a leading firm for patent prosecution nationally and in Texas, and was also ranked in patent litigation and patent transactions in Texas. The directory commends the firm as being “one of the best 360-degree patent practices in the country.” Haynes and Boone has demonstrated “steady growth in prosecution and transactions along with stellar results particularly in post-grant proceedings and litigation.”

The directory also listed 14 partners in the firm’s Texas, California, Chicago, Denver and Washington, D.C., offices as leading lawyers: Randall Brown, Tom Chen, Randall Colson, Ralph Gabric, Alan Herda, Lee Johnston, David McCombs, Greg Michelson, Laura Beth Miller, David O’Brien, David O’Dell, Kenneth Parker, Mark Tidwell and Jeffrey Wolfson.

“We are particularly thrilled to be included in the IAM Patent 1000, as it is based on feedback from our clients and peers in the IP community, who recognize our depth of patent talent across so many jurisdictions,” said Alan Herda, chair of Haynes and Boone’s Intellectual Property Department.

The firm and its lawyers received glowing feedback from researchers and clients, as further detailed below.

Texas

Alan Herda and Randall Brown are noted as being some of the “main anchors on the prosecution and portfolio side.” Brown and Mark Tidwell are described as “IP all-rounders.”

Haynes and Boone’s post-grant practice is lauded as “a jewel in the firm’s crown,” and the directory highlights several lawyers for additional recognition. Nationally ranked David McCombs is described by sources as an “ultra-organized, extremely responsive and sophisticated counselor who is a true pleasure to partner with” and a “zealous but very professional advocate.” He and David O’Dell are recognized for their sterling work for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) in inter partes reviews. Described by researchers as a “software and semiconductors whizz,” David O’Brien is noted as “an accomplished lead counsel at the PTAB and a high-value patent prosecutor.”

The firm is described by researchers as “a one-stop shop,” with Head of Technology Transactions Randall Colson singled out for his “dexterity” in providing licensing and deal support.

California

The Haynes and Boone lawyers in California “adopt an interdisciplinary scheme of thinking to solve complex problems.” Tom Chen has “comprehensive expertise in prosecution, counselling and litigation” and is appreciated for his “rigorously commercial approach.” Greg Michelson is “a technical engineer with an aerospace background who prosecutes and coordinates strategy” for numerous clients. Kenneth Parker is noted as being one of the “best patent trial lawyers on the West Coast” and as having “extensive PTAB, ITC and district court experience.”

Colorado

Lee Johnston, who joined the firm in 2019, was ranked in Colorado. IAM Patent 1000 says that “any list of the top litigators in this market needs Lee on it.”

Illinois

Hired in 2019, Ralph Gabric and Laura Beth Miller “bring an enhanced contentious skillset to the firm and add to what is already one of the country’s best post-grant practices.” Miller was also ranked nationally in the International Trade Commission section.

Washington, D.C.

Ranked in patent prosecution, Jeffrey Wolfson is lauded as being an “on-point, business-minded lawyer” who has the “magic touch when it comes to keeping clients out of court through risk-sensitive prosecution.”
