Latin Lawyer 250 Directory Highlights Haynes and Boone Talent in International and Mexico Listings

DALLAS / MEXICO CITY/ NEW YORK – As it has for more than 10 years, Latin Lawyer 250 has recognized Haynes and Boone, LLP lawyers for their international and Mexico-based legal work, this year singling out 19 practitioners and seven practice groups for inclusion in the highly regarded listing of recommended law firms.

In 2014, Latin Lawyer expanded its recognition of the firm’s capabilities by recognizing the aviation practice group in both the International and Mexico listings, while adding New York Partner Frank Vivero for corporate securities, Mexico City Foreign Associate Patricia Mastropierro for aviation and former U.S. Ambassador Eduardo Aguirre, a senior adviser to the firm, for his deep Spanish and Latin America ties.

Editors praised the firm’s capital markets and M&A, energy, restructuring and insolvency, real estate and tourism, and aviation practices. The Mexico section noted that the firm has continued the steady build-out of out its 20-year-old Mexico City office and it praised the firm’s Mexico-based work in banking and finance, and project finance and infrastructure.

Researchers noted that the firm is “well regarded across a range of industries and sectors in Latin America, which has always differentiated it from those Texan rivals who have stuck very closely to energy work.” It also complimented Haynes and Boone’s cooperation agreement with the “high-profile association with noteworthy energy boutique MMA Advogados, which gives it a strong link in the country that few Texan firms can match.”

The directory recognized the firm’s corporate and M&A group for “the easy fluidity between the Mexican and U.S. practice,” and noted how “at Haynes and Boone the lawyers from the two countries are frequently seen working together.”

The firm’s aviation practice group made its first appearance in both the International and Mexico listings, with the editors highlighting the firm’s representation of American Airlines and the Hong Kong airline Cathay Pacific.

Americas Practice Group leader Larry Pascal, a Dallas-based partner, was recognized for chairing the Texas Supreme Court task force on liberalizing rules for foreign associates, while New York Partners George Wang and Gil Porter along with Houston Partner Charles Beckham are described as “prominent.” New York Partner Vivero, meanwhile, “brings valuable experience in Latin American corporate securities transactions,” the editors said.

On the real estate and tourism fronts, the listings pointed to Mexico City Partner Antonio Diez de Bonilla, who is “well regarded in the industry,” and noted the firm’s work with Hyatt and the Lehman Brothers. The directory also highlighted the bankruptcy and insolvency work in representing “the estate of Michael Jordan in the restructuring of International Hospital and its assets in Mexico, Brazil, and Costa Rica.”

Mexico City Partner Antonio Franck was featured in multiple practices, including restructuring and insolvency, corporate and M&A. Editors said Franck is “easily one of the top corporate partners in the country with a wealth of international experience.” One of his oil clients remarked, “He is always available, providing very solid advice, and is very pragmatic and able to easily understand the client’s needs.

The firm’s energy practice group also received recognition for the firm’s “strong book of energy-related work across the region” and its “association with MMA Advogados in Brazil.” Mexico City Partner Hunt Buckley garnered praise for his “solid experience in the energy sector throughout Latin America,” while the editors said having Washington, D.C. Senior Counsel Herbert Glaser is "key” for broader projects work.

Latin Lawyer 250 also touched on recent key hires, including Houston Partner Ariel Ramos and Ambassador Aguirre. This sort of hiring demonstrates the firm’s continued commitment to the region, researchers said.
