Multiple Haynes Boone Lawyers, Practices Rank Among Best in U.S. in 2021 Legal 500 Directory

June 11, 2021
The Legal 500 U.S. ranked five Haynes and Boone, LLP practice areas and 17 lawyers as standouts in the 2021 edition of the legal directory.

The directory, now in its 34th year, analyzes the capabilities of law firms and lawyers in various markets, based on surveys of more than 300,000 buyers of legal services. The Legal 500 is an independent guide; firms and individuals are recommended purely on merit.

Haynes and Boone practices and lawyers were ranked in the following areas:

Trademarks: Non-Contentious (including Prosecution, Portfolio Management and Licensing)

The Legal 500 ranked Haynes and Boone among the Top 17 firms in the country and recommended six partners spanning Haynes and Boone’s Dallas, New York, Washington, D.C., and Orange County offices: Purvi Patel Albers, Jeff Becker, David Bell, Theresa Conduah, Erin Hennessy, and Joe Matal.

Haynes and Boone “fields a team of experienced trademark lawyers across the country,” the directory said. “Acting for clients in the advertising, telecoms, financial services and music industries, the team handles the full range of IP matters, including domain name disputes, oppositions and enforcement.”

The Legal 500 quoted a client who said: “The H&B team can consult, help prosecute marks, and provide infringement advice in any country.” Another source said: “David Bell [chair of the firm’s Trademark Practice] leads the team and is exceptional. Pleasant, efficient and always forward-looking. Tiffany Ferris is a dynamo and very knowledgeable on IP and advertising matters.”

Structured Finance: Derivatives and Structured Products

The Legal 500 ranked Haynes and Boone among the Top 20 firms nationally in Structured Finance and elevated the practice to a higher tier than it ranked in the 2020 Legal 500 US directory. In the 2021 directory, the Legal 500 described the Structured Finance practice as “diverse, encompassing a wide variety of asset classes, including equity, FX and increasingly environmental, social and governance (ESG) investments. The group advises buy-side and end-user clients, including an impressive array of institutional investors. Areas of expertise include traditional and more exotic hedging and derivatives, project finance-related hedging agreements, over-the-counter and structured derivatives, as well as ISDA regulatory and prime brokerage advice.”

The Legal 500 recommended five finance partners from the firm’s New York, Houston, and Washington, D.C. offices: Giorgio Bovenzi, Matthew Frankle, Neal Kaminsky, Phil Lookadoo, and Brian Sung.

“What makes this practice unique is that the team members succeed in combining legal knowledge with practical knowledge,” one client said, adding particular praise for Bovenzi. He “is able to reconcile Anglo-American legal concepts with continental European legal concepts in a practical manner.”

Energy Litigation: Oil and Gas

Haynes and Boone’s Energy Litigation Practice was ranked among the Top 20 nationally, earning kudos for its “experience litigating in state and federal courts, as well as its handling of domestic and international arbitration proceedings.”

A client remarked: “Haynes and Boone’s energy litigation team provides unparalleled . . . experience in oil & gas matters. Unlike many litigators today, they have actually tried cases and obtained defense verdicts. They do an excellent job of developing a successful strategy for high stakes, high exposure litigation.”

The Legal 500 ranked Energy Litigation Partners Michael Mazzone and Craig Stahl as recommended lawyers.

M&A: Middle-Market (Sub-$500M)

The Legal 500 ranked Haynes and Boone among the nation’s best at handling middle-market M&A transactions, and it listed Tom Harris, chair of the firm’s M&A practice, as a recommended lawyer in the sector.

“Haynes and Boone, L.L.P. handles a wide variety of M&A and related transactions, including spin-offs, divestitures, strategic alliance and distressed transactions, representing both buyers and sellers,” the Legal 500 said.

Employee Benefits, Executive Compensation and Retirement Plans: Transactional

Haynes and Boone was included among the nation’s top firms at handing employee benefits and executive compensation matters, according to the Legal 500. The 2021 directory included Partners Jesse Gelsomini and Susan Wetzel and Counsel Scott Thompson as recommended lawyers in the field.

Haynes and Boone’s “Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation Practice has been advising clients in the energy, healthcare, retail, financial services and food and beverages sectors on high-value acquisitions, restructurings, and benefit transfers,” the Legal 500 wrote.

Haynes and Boone is an international corporate law firm with offices in Texas, New York, California, Charlotte, Chicago, Denver, Washington, D.C., London, Mexico City and Shanghai, providing a full spectrum of legal services in energy, technology, financial services and private equity. With 600 lawyers, Haynes and Boone is ranked among the largest U.S.-based firms by The National Law Journal, The American Lawyer and The Lawyer.
